E IL TOPO is an artists’ magazine that began in Naples in 1992 thanks to an idea of Gabriele Di Matteo and Franco Silvestro, and has evolved into an international community of artists and thinkers with a post-Situationist attitude. Until 1996 – the year in which E Il Topo stopped publication – eleven issues were produced, involving artists who were soon to become major names on the contemporary art scene. The magazine resurfaced in 2012 (with issue no. 12, Rebirth) after 16 years of silence, relying on a new editorial staff. The collaborative and contributive character of the project has made it the ideal vehicle to amplify the group’s actions: a clandestine approach, contrary to any editorial policy.

La traditionnelle dichotomie entre « celui qui pense » et « celui qui fait » est ainsi remise en jeu, afin de dépasser une appréhension strictement esthétique ou utilitaire, et envisager de nouvelles formes de diffusion de l’information. Les rapports de pouvoir, de prestige, d’identité s’en trouvent également perturbés.

"BLUR N°5, Her variation" è la copia fedele di 1/2 an inventory, una mostra di David Liver presentata nel 2014 alla galleria Nivet-Carzon di Parigi. Se non fosse appunto per la menzione "Variation" che ne suggerisce lo slittamento. In quell'occasione l'artista invitò alcuni compagni del collettivo E IL TOPO per una performance, che terminava l'allestimento vandalizzando spazio ed opere a mezzo di spray grigio.

Fictions critiques, by the & IL TOPO collective, is the second instalment of an audio piece first presented at Frac Bretagne in 2014 as an audio-guide for the exhibition Collection. Un rêve d’éternité. For their presentation at CLARK, the collective has created a playlist that provides a surprising and irreverent commentary on E IL TOPO magazine’s 20 issues, published between 1992 and today. Fictions critiques offers a critical review of the history of this Naples-based magazine that rings forth like a poetic deconsecration. To do all this dirty work, & IL TOPO appointed its least prestigious members (David Liver, Frédéric Liver and Guillaume Clermont). But, so as not to disappoint its audience, the collective also enlisted the help of artists Iain Baxter& and Caspar is Caspar, providing the necessary level of Canaditude and Belgitude to the project. As for the rest of the collective, well, they’re probably at the beach.

E IL TOPO è arrivato. Di soppiatto. Si palesa non atteso, come gli è solito fare, annunciando ironicamente il proprio sterminio: derattizzazione in corso.
La sola presenza del topo genera allarmismi: notturno e incontrollabile, onnivoro e prolifico, tenace e resistente, sinantropo e potenzialmente impuro, è percepito come pericoloso. Odiato e perseguitato, seviziato come cavia è invece un essere socievole con i suoi simili, intelligente e scaltro ma sfuggente al controllo e dunque trasgressivo.

Quand Paul Mc Cartney compose Helter Skelter en 1968, il cherche à produire un rock violent, lourd et vulgaire. Lui le ‘gentil Beatle’ veut se démarquer du son de l’époque et casser son image trop sage. Le morceau est aujourd’hui considéré comme avantgardiste des mouvements rocks psychédelique et heavy metal des années 70.
Helter Skelter et le White Album des Beatles sont tragiquement célèbres pour avoir soi disant « inspiré » la série de crimes racistes perpétrés par Charles Manson et ses adeptes en 1969.

E IL TOPO réapparaît en 2012 après seize années d'absence. L'exposition au Cneai parcourt l'histoire de la revue. Un focus sur onze images provenant de chaque numéros, des bribes de performances filmées, une sélection d'œuvres sources des projets éditoriaux témoignent de la vitalité du propos. Les nouvelles parutions sont en consultation et en vente dans un espace bookshop scénographié par la rédaction. On y trouve notamment une sélection d'œuvres originales créées pour la revue.
Fondée sur la participation et l'inclusion (d'où le " E " ou " et " de conjonction initiale dans le titre) E IL TOPO est une revue d'artistes née de l'imagination de Gabriele Di Matteo et Franco Silvestro, qui voit le jour à Naples en 1992. Bientôt se joignent à eux Armando della Vittoria en qualité de directeur, Vedovamazzei, Piero Gatto, Manlio Caropreso, Maurizio Elettrico.
Il 19-20 aprile prossimi, la Quadriennale, nella sua sede di Villa Carpegna, promuove una “due giorni” su arte e informazione.

Y Liver (David Liver e Rugiada Cadoni) è un duo di performer di origine milanese che vive a Parigi. Il loro lavoro si sviluppa attorno ai temi della narrazione, della costruzione identitaria e delle relazioni tra l'individuo e la storia.
In occasione di Un mese con E IL TOPO, presenta una performance nella quale, dialogando con i “dinosauri”, compone un repertorio di azioni svolte negli ultimi anni. La manipolazione e la perversione del linguaggio, così come i costanti riferimenti alla cultura ebraica, sono il materiale estetico dal quale il duo avanza interrogativi poetici.

E IL TOPO, in collaborazione con Careof DOCVA, Milano e SUPPORTICO LOPEZ, Berlino è lieto di annunciare l'imminente uscita di Re-Birth, il dodicesimo numero della rivista. La presentazione al pubblico è
prevista il 27 marzo al termine di Un mese con E IL TOPO: un programma di appuntamenti ideati dalla redazione, operativa dal 29 febbraio al 27 marzo all'interno dello spazio espositivo di Careof.
Il progetto editoriale d'artista E IL TOPO (Edizioni Nuovi Strumenti, Brescia) - nato da un'idea di Gabriele di Matteo, Piero Gatto, Franco Silvestro e Vedovamazzei - in soli quattro anni (dal 1992 al 1996) e 11 numeri, ha profeticamente registrato attraverso i contributi di Stefano Arienti, Art Club 2000, Massimo Bartolini, Vanessa Beecroft, Maurizio Cattelan, Mark Dion, Dominique Gonzales Foerster e Grazia Toderi tra gli altri, lo spirito e l'attitudine di una generazione che ha segnato il proprio tempo e la scena artistica internazionale contemporanea. Stampato offset bianco/nero in circa 1000 copie su carta riciclata, ogni numero de E IL TOPO ha accolto progetti inediti, proposti secondo un'insolita strategia editoriale fondata principalmente sul potere insito nella discontinuità di senso, nonchè sul gioco, l'ironia e sul détournement.
Ma perchè parlare de E IL TOPO oggi? Cosa o chi ha risvegliato il Topo dal letargo?
E' stata la riappropriazione della rivista nel 2010 - all'insaputa della storica redazione - da parte dell'artista Francesco Fossati (1985) ad aver innescato un confronto intergenerazionale, e ad aver alimentato
nuovi propositi intorno a un rinnovato gruppo di lavoro, i cui risultati sono oggi rappresentati dalla 'rinascita' della rivista stessa. A sedici anni di distanza dall'ultima uscita, il nuovo primo numero è frutto di una open call indetta dalla redazione e finalizzata al reperimento di materiale fotografico inedito, relativo a personalità del mondo dell'arte scomparse nel periodo in cui E IL TOPO ha fatto perdere le sue tracce. Una significativa selezione del
materiale raccolto confluirà all'interno del progetto, divenendo a pieno titolo contenuto di Re-Birth, dodicesimo numero della rivista.
Questo progetto, che si confronta col tema della Ri-nascita e della Morte, vuole a suo modo rendere omaggio a tutti coloro che hanno dedicato la loro vita all'arte e che sono scomparsi abbandonando il 'campo di battaglia' tra il 1996 e il 2012.

La redazione de E IL TOPO sarà presente dal martedì al sabato, dalle 15 alle 19 presso lo spazio espositivo di Careof, a disposizione di chiunque sia interessato a conoscere il progetto editoriale.
